This paper explains the scientific names given to dragonflies by the German entomologist Ferdinand Karsch (1853-1936), as well as the names given by other authors to genera, into which taxa described by him are classified presently. First Karsch's life and work are described. Following the explanation of the names, there is a discussion of the preferences evident in his naming conventions, his relationships with other scientists, and his significance for our understanding of dragonflies.
