"Libellula carolina"

Help us protect dragonflies and have a new species named after you!
Your donation contributes to the exploration and protection of the variety of dragonflies on our planet.
Get involved!

Within some IDF projects, our local partners discover new dragonflies and damselflies - up to 2019, more than 50 species! As an acknowledgement of your financial support, we offer you the opportunity to have a new species named after you or a person chosen by you. Get in touch with us in order to learn about how to contribute to the improvement of knowledge about and protection of biodiversity and become the patron of "your own species".

How does it work?! Here are some FAQs:

How do we use your donation?  It's quite simple: 100% go right into our projects (including their documentation, usually as IDF reports). 0% are used for administration (all of our work is down honorary). Another 0% are used for advertising (this homepage, for instance, is created, maintained and paid for by INULA). The other 0% are used for other purposes. - Where else are 100% of the money you donate used exclusively for concrete projects?!

How does this naming of species work? A scientific species name consists of two parts: the first one is the genus name that is usually already fixed. The second part is the species name. Here, a first name can be given (e.g. Pyrrhosoma elisabethae), a surname (e.g. Argia schorri) or both combined (e.g. Diplacina guentherpetersi). This means you can honour yourself, your special one, your offspring or your favourite star (how about Libellula neilyoungi?). And grant yourself, him or her some immortality...

What do you mean - immortality? Many people would like to "immoartile themselves" by some means or other. You could write a book, win the Nobel prize and still be forgotten after some decades. Or write a song that hits the charts but just for one season. A species, however, just like a diamond, is forever! It lasts forever, even if - in the worst case - it goes extinct and lives on just in books and collections, such as the dodo or the aurochs.

How does it feel? From our own experience: quite delightful:-) It is really some party chitchat ("Is it really true that a dragonfly was named after you?"). And it is so much more interesting than the usual talk about conventional status symbols such as lakeside villas, yachts, Lamborghinis (plus it is a lot more affordable). Moreover, it comes with a gloriole: "I donated for an important and meaningful purpose. Without me this species would have never been found at all!!! (And then I didn't want to offend those researchers by not accepting their desire to name ist after me.)

How much does it cost? A one-time donation of a low four digit amount of euros makes you eligible to become the eponym of a dragonfly or damselfly species.

How much does it cost after tax? Your donation is tax deductible (depending on your country's regulations). It is more than fair that the state you live in boosts your impact on nature protection by paying you back some money (that you might want to reinvest in dragonfly research rightaway:-)

Why does it cost so little? 100% of your donation are used for our projects - mostly expeditions to regions where no or only little knowledge exists about the dragonfly fauna. Check out our project reports to get an idea! In many cases we support local dragonfly experts. With the money you spend for a new TV set, a longer excursion with bag and baggage can be financed. In this way, we foster knowledge building in countries where nature protection is not fully yet established. Researchers from wealthier countries are only granted travelling allowances - but this may decide whether an enthusiastic dragonfly specialist can afford a field trip or not. These specialists invest much of their own time and money into their projects.
